Subject: 2/3/86 Hunt's YEM

2/3/86 Hunt's, Burlington, VT

Thanks to Billy Rickards for the tape!

Zenzile's supposed to educate people on South Africa at some point
during this gig.

Wow. This YEM opens up with gentle picking from Trey, before it seuges
smoothly into the opening with which we are all familiar (but this
version is in slower time). There's someone on keyboards, someone on
VIOLIN (!?!?!?), and someone on rhythm guitar, along with Trey, Mike
and Fish. This is one hell of a strange opening to YEM as a result.
Doesn't sound all that pretty, frankly (this violin is weird...).
Nirvana at 1:48, and it actually sounds pretty cool with this violin!!
This person has heard YEM before, or his/her part was written for
him/her! They should do this again (violin in YEM's opening segment,
and not simply in the jam.. see 6/16/95 with Boyd from DMB).

Mike's solo section at 2:48, but there's no solo from him in here (I
guess it was before the time when he began taking advantage of this
section to solo). Yes, folks, there's still violin in here, in the
pre-charge (which has a relaxed feel to it, given the slower time to
this old version). Trey doesn't hit the Note at 4:15 or so.. this
Note-hitting business came in later versions. This pre-charge section
is otherwise basically the same composition that you hear played
regularly today in YEM.

"Boy" at 5:40, after a charge and NO SCREAM. In fact, "Boy" is
uttered quietly, along with MG and S. WUDMTF segment kicks in
groovily by 6:18. If there was ever any doubt that they are saying
WUDMTF in here, this version should end it (clearly articulated).

Jam segment begins at 7:29 (there's no "tramps jam"). Trey just
starts noodling around melodiously. Lots of activity around 9:05..
(and no, I haven't been able to hear any violin in here since the
opening segment, fwiw.. that doesn't mean it isn't played in here,
though). The lead soloist goes off in amatuerish fashion..

At 9:56 the jam segment ends and within ten seconds, at 10:05, the
closing WUDMTF segment comes in. Everyone plays along for several
WUDMTF lyrics/chants. The final couple WUDMTF chants are repeated
unaccompanied. No vocal jam..

Just wanted to review this early version for the historical record.
If I had to rate it, even compared to other early versions, this is no
better than avg imo. C+ rating (the plus because of the violin).
"Like Mike says, "Real bands don't just play requests... so we're
going to play a request." (Trey)
