Very nice show, although IMHO Santa Cruz was the best of the four Bay 
Area shows.  The quality of the jams tonight was different than other 
nights - in several places the jams seemed to get there very slowly, to 
the point where it sounded a lot like the Dead.  This was particularly 
true in the beginning of Bowie, where the band took the opening section 
and developed it into something promising, but didn't do a lot with it; 
Trey eventually struck a short, sharp chord and they started into the 
body of the song.

I got to hear Sample for the third time in four shows - it's quickly 
becoming one of my favorites.  The Halley's Comet was a definite gem.  I 
found myself drawing extremely strong parallels between the song and 
Frank Zappa and his doo-wop days, which only enhanced its appeal.  The 
Chalkdust screamed, as did the Mike's H2 Groove, where the first blast 
of fog rolled steadily off the stage and into the orchestra pit.

The coolest part of the show was during Golgi.  They had finished the 
first verses and were jamming in the middle part of the song, when Trey 
started to play his part softer and softer - to the point where it was 
no louder than his voice.  The audience quietened for a decently long 
amount of time before some chugchug spoiled the mood.  This same 
behavior made the Carolina very difficult - two false starts, then they 
regrouped and sang the first line to Suzie in a barbershop swing, then 
finally got through a great rendition of Carolina.

Portland, here I come!
